STREETS MAINTENANCE TRADESWORKER I

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Performs a variety of routine semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, and maintenance of city streets and right-of-ways. Works under the general supervision of the Streets Maintenance Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Receives and understands written and verbal instructions. Reads and interprets blue prints, diagrams, and technical data.

Using a varied of hand tools, power tools and specialized equipment, participates in the maintenance and repair of buildings, facilities and streets.

Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used to perform required projects.

Work requires standing for extended periods, frequent lifting and/or moving of 25 pounds or more, frequent bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, digging, reaching, crawling, kneeling, and climbing of ladders.

Insures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.

Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.

Possess a valid Florida Driver's License and CDL certification, or ability to obtain one.

Operates trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment and materials.

Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew.

Works frequently in extreme weather. Occasionally works in confined areas and various heights.

May be required to assist the Facilities Maintenance Division when needed.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

Sweeping and cleaning of work areas and work vehicles. Completing forms, writing reports, delivering messages.

Performs all other duties as assigned.

CRITICAL SKILLS/EXPERTISE:

Considerable knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities.

Skill in operation of the listed tools and equipment.

Ability to use Computers with windows based programs, to include but not limited to e-mail, Microsoft outlook, excel and word.

Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; Ability to work safely; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

EQUIPMENT USED:

Motorized vehicles and equipment, including dump truck, pickup truck, saws, pumps, sanders, generators, compactor, paint brushes, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, mobile radio, phone and all other related tools and equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK LOCATION AND ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.

The work locations are at all city owned buildings and facilities, all city land, city streets and all city right-of-ways. The noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or equivalent. One to three years of experience performing work in the building trades, to include street maintenance, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Possess a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL) certification, Class B, or obtain the CDL certification within six (6) months of employment.

Possess the National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS-700 within 90 days of employment. There may be additional NIMS required, which will be schedule by your Supervisor.
