Independence Lane Grand Opening

The City of Maitland will celebrate the grand opening of Independence Lane – a new destination for downtown restaurants and activities – with a big night of live music, food and family fun.

The Getdown Downtown from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, kicks off a monthly series of events the first Friday of each month along the newly rebuilt Independence Lane next to Maitland City Hall between Horatio and Packwood avenues. An official ribbon cutting with city officials and guests will be at 7:15 p.m.

Enjoy an outdoor concert with a large variety of food vendors, beer and other drinks complete with tables and chairs set out along a scenic brick street and festival lighting. Entertainment will feature Orlando-based cover band Blender and a performance from the Colby Center for Dance and Performing Arts.

Family Fun
Kids entertainment features the Magic Dragon – a 37-foot-long, inflatable attraction with two climbs and two slides, realistic scales and claws. Getdown Downtown also will include free games with prizes, a face painter, Maitland police officers and firefighters, emergency vehicles and Freddy the Fire Engine.

The Maitland Public Library and the Maitland Arts and History Museums will have special craft tables featuring dragon activities. Kona Ice will have cold treats along with numerous food vendors.

Blender will take the stage at 6 p.m. and will perform throughout the evening with cover songs mixing classic and modern rock, Motown and pop favorites from the 80’s to today’s radio hits.

The band originally started as a duo and grew into a five-piece group with guitar, bass, keyboard, saxophone, drums and vocal harmonies. Blender keeps a busy show schedule, performing at local venues and events around Central Florida including Earthday Birthday, Orlando Beer Festival and more.

Getdown Downtown will include local food vendors and food trucks offering American and international meals. Beer and drinks will be available.

Admission is free. Free parking for the event will be available in the lower levels of the parking garage at the new City Centre across from Maitland City Hall. Enter and exit the garage from Orlando Avenue.

Other parking will be south of Independence Lane across Packwood Avenue and north of Independence Lane across Horatio Avenue. Look for directional signs around the event site.

Street parking will be unavailable along Independence Lane all day Oct. 5 in advance of the Getdown Downtown street party.
This grand opening event is presented by the City of Maitland in partnership with the Maitland Chamber of Commerce and the Maitland Downtown Partnership.
